Narrow aisle forklifts
Frequently used in warehouse applications is the Narrow Aisle Forklift. These forklifts are important equipments in the industry because their extreme maneuverability and small size enable warehouses to maximize storing space. They could easily negotiate aisles as narrow as 1.8 meters wide, while standard lift trucks require 3.4 meters of aisle width, at least.
This type of forklift is sub-categorized as "narrow aisle forklifts" and "very narrow aisle forklifts". The former require 2.4 meters - 3 meters in aisle width, whereas the latter could function in a 1.8 meters wide space.
The narrow aisle forklift design features forks that are positioned at right angles to the body of the truck. The trucks do not need to face the shelves, but instead drive straight down the aisle picking up loads to the side. This design feature is the key to their suitability for limited spaces.
Some very narrow aisle forklifts come with optical or wire guidance systems which ensure the forklift moves in a straight line down the aisle, that leaves the operator free to focus on load picking and placement.
The cushion tires which come with these types of lifts are made of solid rubber. The hard tires perform well on concrete floors and paved, smooth surfaces. Narrow aisle forklifts have electric motors suited for use within indoor environments. Propane-powered versions are available also.
