Lift Truck Battery Safety
The power to operate electric lift trucks is supplied by large industrial batteries which need to be charged regularly and maintained correctly. Safety measures must always be followed while connecting the battery to the charger. It is really important to check battery fluid levels.
Personal Protective Equipment - PPE
Eye protection is vital for anybody working with a forklift battery. Full protection includes safety glasses, goggles, or a full face shield. The right way to protect clothing and skin from leaked acid or other residue is to wear thick rubber gloves on the hands and an approved apron on the body.
Emergency Eyewash Station
Near the charging place should be an emergency eyewash station. The route to the station should not be blocked and an employee who is injured must be able to reach the eyewash post from the charging place within 10 seconds while walking.
Charger Safety
The charger should be the same amperage as the battery. It must be turned off when the battery is being plugged in.
Open Flames
Open flames are not allowed in the vicinity of a battery and charging area. Do not allow things like matches or lighters to be utilized when someone is checking the battery fluid levels.
Ventilation
It is essential to keep the battery charging area properly ventilated. The recharging process could release fumes. These fumes are both explosive and toxic.
